Viscose is the classic natural man-made fibre: cellulose is chemically converted several times into a spinning liquid, which is then pressed through spinnerets to form threads. Their thickness depends on the diameter of the nozzle.
Properties of viscose
Viscose is used mainly for its natural sheen. It has a smooth surface and an evenly flowing drape, can be spun very fine, is soft and pliant, and absorbs perspiration well thanks to its high moisture uptake.
Limits compared with cotton
Textiles made of viscose are usually cheaper than cotton ones – their main use is therefore in fashionable, budget-friendly underwear. In return, viscose is heavier, cannot be boil-washed, creases and is less hard-wearing; when wet in particular, it is sensitive to rubbing, wringing and spin-drying.
