Modal is a natural man-made fibre (a cellulosic fibre) obtained from wood, a renewable raw material. It feels soft like "skin on skin", drapes gently and keeps its silky lustre even after many washes. Modal is highly absorbent and takes up to 50 % more moisture than cotton.
Production and properties
Modal is made from cellulose and spun into an especially fine fibre. Compared with cotton it offers higher tensile strength, greater elasticity and better shape retention and durability; it wrinkles less, is less sensitive to heat and is very easy to wash and iron. As a blending partner, modal reinforces the strengths of other fibres and makes colours shine.
Where you will find modal
Thanks to its pleasant feel on the skin, modal is widely used in underwear – often blended with long-staple cotton, whose properties it complements. You will find modal in shirts, briefs and lingerie where softness, colour brilliance and a silky handle matter most.
