Ajour Knit (Openwork Knitted Fabric)

Ajour knit is the collective term for knitted fabrics with openwork patterns. The openwork effects are created by transferring individual stitches to neighbouring needles during knitting – small, regular openings appear in the fabric at these points.

Properties

The transferred stitches give the fabric a delicate, lacy appearance without any separate lace being sewn on – pattern and fabric are one. At the same time the openings make the fabric lighter and more breathable than a dense knit: air and moisture can circulate more freely, which is especially pleasant in garments worn next to the skin.

Where you will find it

Ajour fabrics are typically used for summer underwear, fine camisoles and light nightwear – wherever a decorative, airy quality is wanted.
