Interlock is a knit construction in which, using a special production technique, the space between the wales – as it occurs in fine rib, for example – is filled by an additional stitch.
Properties
Interlock is double-faced and has a dense, closed surface with two identical fabric sides. Its extensibility is high, but its elasticity is less good – after stretching, the fabric recovers its shape less readily. Overall, interlock resembles jersey, but is slightly more elastic and thinner.
Why interlock is ideal for underwear
Because two stitch layers are worked interlocked into each other, interlock does not curl at the edges – a great advantage over single jersey. The fabric is therefore excellently suited to sewing thin garments such as underwear.
