Nicki is a velvety knitted fabric produced as loop plush on circular knitting machines: the small loops are cut open and shorn to a velvet-like finish – hence the name shear plush. Loop plush with uncut loops, by contrast, is called terry.
Where the name comes from
Sweaters made of shear plush became famous in Germany in the 1950s under the name "Nicki", having already been sold worldwide before. They were created by Nicky Chini of Milan, who also produced high-quality ties, scarves and dressing gowns – he had them trademarked as early as 1938. Nicki, in its altered spelling, has since become the common name for this velvety knit.
Where you will find it
Typical uses are cosy nightwear, loungewear and dressing gowns – wherever a soft, velvety and warming surface is wanted.
