Warp-knitted goods are produced on special warp-knitting and raschel machines: many threads running in parallel – the warp – are joined together. Depending on the thread guidance and thus the stitch formation, a wide variety of constructions results, here called lapping movements.
Warp-knitted fabric is preferably made from man-made fibres or from pure silk, and is used for loose-fitting day- and nightwear as well as for shapewear fabrics. It has very low stretch, is tension-stable, ladder-proof and shape-retaining – yet soft with a flowing drape.
Technically advanced warp-knitting machines allow highly varied patterning – then referred to as raschel technique and raschel fabrics. Almost comparable to the jacquard technique in weaving, this is how laces, curtains and many other patterned knits are created. Charmeuse is the best-known warp-knitted fabric: underwear fabrics made from continuous threads such as viscose, polyester or, rarely, silk.
