Eyelet Embroidery (Broderie Anglaise)

Eyelet embroidery is an embroidery lace on woven fabric: depending on the pattern, the fabric is pierced in places that were previously outlined with dense stitching. The embroidered edges keep the holes from fraying.

Origin and names

After the fine cotton fabric originally used, the technique is also called cambric embroidery; its best-known international name is broderie anglaise ("English embroidery"). It is classically worked tone on tone – white embroidery on white batiste – which creates the characteristic airy, delicate eyelet look.

Where you will find it

The openwork patterns look summery and romantic. You will find them mainly on nightdresses, slips and blouses, and as decorative edges and yokes on cotton day- and nightwear.
