Jacquard Weaving

In jacquard weaving – unlike in simple weaving techniques, where warp threads are grouped into a shaft and raised or lowered together – every single warp thread can be controlled individually.

Practically unlimited patterning

A different shed can be formed for every new row, for every new weft thread. This opens up practically unlimited pattern possibilities – from damasks, woven laces and tapestries to tablecloths, ties and carpets. Patterns made this way are more elaborate to produce than printed ones, but far more durable.

Invented in Lyon in 1805

This remarkable machine was invented by Joseph-Marie Jacquard in Lyon in 1805 and has carried his name ever since.
