Cutting Out (Layout)

In cutting out, a lay plan with the most efficient use of fabric is created first, before the pieces are cut from the fabric roll.

Electronic – with one exception

The cutting itself is done almost entirely electronically nowadays. An exception is striped or ring-patterned fabric: because the pattern must match exactly across the individual plies, it is sometimes still cut by hand even today.

Why this matters for your underwear

An optimal lay plan not only saves fabric, it also ensures that patterns such as stripes or rings line up neatly at the seams later on.
