Galloon lace (German: Galontspitze) is a narrow lace trim finished with decorative scallops on both long edges. It is woven or knitted and therefore looks equally attractive towards both sides – unlike volant lace, which has one scalloped and one straight edge.
Galloon lace is produced as a continuous narrow band on weaving or warp-knitting machines, today mostly on Raschel machines. Both edges leave the machine fully finished, so the trim does not fray and can be sewn on without hemming. For underwear it is usually made with a small amount of elastane, so the lace stretches comfortably with the body instead of cutting in.
Typical uses are decorative bands and edgings on bras, briefs, vests, bodysuits and nightwear. A wide galloon band can also be cut lengthwise down the middle, which yields two volant laces with one scalloped edge each – a common practice in lingerie production.
