Volant lace (flounce lace) is a woven or knitted narrow lace with a scalloped edge on one side and a straight edge on the other. The straight edge is enclosed in the seam, while the scalloped edge remains free as a decorative finish.
Like galloon lace, volant lace is produced as a continuous band, today mostly on Raschel machines. Often it is even derived directly from galloon lace: cutting a wide galloon band with scallops on both sides lengthwise down the middle yields two volant laces. For underwear the bands are usually elasticated so that they move with the body without cutting in.
The free scalloped edge makes volant lace the classic edge finish: on the leg openings of briefs, on the neckline of bras and vests, and on the hems of nightdresses and slips. The straight edge disappears invisibly into the seam.
