Cut (Pattern Making)

The cut translates the design into reality – for the model as a whole, but also for the many individual pieces a textile product is made of. A bra from a lingerie range, for example, consists of at least 15 to 20 individual pattern pieces.

From basic pattern to size range

The basic patterns are created in a fixed size, for example size 38 for women or size 5 for men. They are then recorded and processed electronically – the basic pattern is subsequently translated into the other sizes required, a step known as grading.

Why the cut matters so much

Especially with underwear worn directly on the skin, the cut decides fit and comfort – each of the many pieces has to match the others exactly.
