Washing and caring for underwear correctly

Care tips | underwear-shopping.de

Please always wash new underwear before wearing it for the first time. This will remove any production residues and prevent skin irritation.

To ensure your underwear looks good and lasts a long time, it is important to follow the care instructions on the labels. You will find an overview of the care symbols used further down this page.

Most underwear items can be easily washed in the washing machine at low temperatures. If possible, use a delicate cycle. If this is not available, we recommend a programme for easy-care fabrics.

Washing tips by material and colour

White underwear

White and coloured underwear should always be washed separately – even when hand washing. Otherwise, there is a risk of colour transfer, which can cause white laundry to appear grey and dull over time.

Coloured underwear

To preserve the brightness of the colours, it is advisable to briefly fix new or strongly coloured underwear before washing it for the first time.
A tried and tested tip: soak the fabrics briefly in cold water with a small splash of vinegar. Then rinse the laundry thoroughly before washing it as usual in the washing machine.

Lingerie with lace

Lace fabrics are particularly delicate and can easily become distorted. For gentle cleaning, we recommend hand washing in lukewarm soapy water or with a liquid mild detergent.
Do not wring – simply squeeze out gently and then lay flat on a towel to dry.

Underwired bras

Underwired bras should preferably be washed by hand to prevent the underwires from breaking or becoming misshapen.
If you still want to use the washing machine, be sure to use a laundry bag and a delicate cycle.

Drying

Delicate underwear should always be air-dried – ideally on a clothes horse.
Do not dry on a radiator, in direct sunlight or in a tumble dryer, as heat puts a lot of strain on the fibres, elastic and lace. Only sturdy cotton underwear is generally suitable for tumble drying.

Stain removal

For discolouration or stubborn stains – such as blood – we recommend first soaking the item in cold water.
A mild stain remover, e.g. soap-based, can then be used. Please avoid hot water, as this can set stains permanently.
